On Sunday, in a conference hall in Brighton with the press locked out and cameras locked out too, the Green Party of England and Wales became the first party in British political history to decide it wanted to define Zionism as a “form of racism.” The vote was 1,022 to 813. Then members voted down the amendment that would have protected their own Jewish Green Party members from being reported or disciplined for belonging to a Zionist synagogue. That one lost 1,026 to 648. Four of the party's five MPs opposed the motion. Caroline Lucas opposed it and she was heckled. Zack Polanski, the party's Jewish leader, wasn't in the room. Israel barred him from entry within hours. The Chief Rabbi called it poisonous antisemitism. And a survey this week found that two thirds of British Jews describe themselves as Zionists. Patrick Ney sits in for Patrick Schnecker to work out what actually happened, and what it means. #GreenParty #ZackPolanski #Antisemitism #Zionism #BritishPolitics #UKPolitics #Israel #Newsforce #ImpactReport #CarolineLucas #Brighton #JewishCommunity #UKNews #PoliticalAnalysis #Holborn
